LOURDES SUAREZ

Leading the Effort to
Recruit Latina Sisters

Photo of Lourdes Suarez

¡Necesitamos Latinas! We need Latinas! We need you to get involved in the Sister Study to hear your breast cancer experiences, to hear how our families support each other through breast cancer and to study Latinas in research so we can learn what’s unique about our environmental exposures, our lifestyles, our foods and our genes. If Latinas don’t join, we may not know how breast cancer affects us and we won't be able to provide researchers with answers which will help nuestras hijas, sobrinas, nietas y futuras generaciones. This is why I’m involved in the Sister Study. I want to know, Latinos want to know, and researchers want to know what’s unique about Latinas and breast cancer so we can learn to prevent this scary disease.

I was born in the Dominican Republic to Cuban parents and came to the States when I was 8. I say I am Cuban and proud of it! I love the language I was raised with, the culture I grew up in and have always been involved in furthering my culture’s issues in this country. My background is in health education, political science and addressing Latino issues in whatever I do. I have worked with the Sister Study as a consultant and now as a permanent staff member for almost 3 years. I am proud that the Sister Study has Latina representation and want to help enroll more Latinas in the study!
